As Roland and others point out, you need to have an uptodate gcc and binutils, and associated gnu tools. We do most of our development and testing on FreeBSD 4.X and RedHat Linux 6.X. Gcc 2.95.2 or later and binutils 2.9 or later have proven to be reliable for us.
